County Kerry, traditionally known as 'the Kingdom', occupies the scenic South-West of Ireland and, like County Donegal, is home to an Irish-speaking region known as the Gaeltacht, which reflects much of the real character and spirit of the Irish.

. From its mountainous South, with the Beara, Iveragh and Dingle peninsulas and some of the most breathtaking coastlines and beaches in Ireland, to as far North as the Shannon estuary, County Kerry is renowned the world over for its outstanding scenic beauty and abundance of historical and archaeological sites - from Neolithic Man, through Celtic pagans and Early Christianity, while also being the mythical home of many legends of Irish folklore..

For a start there's the Ring of Kerry, Carrantuohill (Irelands highest mountain at1,040metres/3,414 feet), Killarney National Park and the Lakes of Killarney, Skellig Islands, Crag Cave,Staigue Fort, Valentia Observatory, Gallarus Oratory, Ardfert Cathedral, Carrigafoyle Castle, Derrynane House, Muckross Friary and Ross Castle.

And how about Kerry's St Brendan the Navigator, discoverer of America (?); Daniel O'Connell, 'The Liberator' of Ireland; Steve Casey, the undisputed world wrestling Champion who Joe Louis refused to fight; Tom Crean, the noted polar explorer with Scott and Shackleton, and Jerome Connor, sculptor of both the Lusitania memorial at Cobh and the Robert Emmet statue in Washington.

But then Kerry has also produced more than its fair share of world famous writers like John B. Keane, Bryan MacMahon, Brendan Kennelly, Maurice Walsh, George Fitzmaurice, Peig Sayers, Thomas O’Criomhthain, Muiris O’Suilleabhain, Robert Leslie Boland and Sigerson Clifford

Perhaps not so well known is that The British Houses of Parliament were roofed with slate from Kerry; in 1858 the first telegraph cable laid across the Atlantic made Kerry the major focal point for then global communications; one of the world's first monorails is still in operation here; the acclaimed movie Ryan's Daughter was filmed here, and the exact replica famine ship,.Jeanie Johnston, was recently built in County Kerry.

Then there's the exquisite Kenmare lace, the endearing Kerry Bog Ponies and the many popular and quaint festivals each year, like Writers Week, The Rose Of Tralee Festival, Wren's Day, the Cahersiveen Celtic Festival and the oldest festival in Ireland, which has been celebrated in Killorghin unbroken and unchanged every August 11 ... Puck Fair.

For anglers there's mackerel, pollock, cole fish, conger, spurdog, tope, skate, brown trout, sea trout and salmon; for hikers spectacular trails; for cyclists exhilarating rides and for golfers, superb courses.

But for Sneaky Peat it has to be Iveragh's ancient black peat bogs and the folk working them over the years, where one finds the stuff of Ireland
A turf fire tells all!
